One Cheap Gal Money Saving Tips, Coupons, Bargains and Deals

Time for summer picnics, and Three Bean Salad is a family favorite.  Beans are very low in cost, and I love that I can use the canned beans that I already have in my food storage downstairs. It’s a great way to rotate my food items and also enjoy some great protein.

Here’s my favorite recipe for this delightful salad, not too sweet, not too tangy. Courtesty of Simply Recipes.

1 15-oz can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained

1 15-oz can kidney beans, rinsed and drained

1 15-oz can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained

2 celery stalks, chopped fine

1/2 red onion, chopped fine

1 cup fresh, finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

1 Tbsp fresh finely chopped rosemary

1/3 cup apple cider vinegar

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup olive oil

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:
1 In a large bowl, mix the beans, celery, onion, parsley and rosemary.

2 In a separate small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, sugar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Add the dressing to the beans. Toss to coat.

3 Chill beans in the refrigerator for several hours, to allow the beans to soak up the flavor of the dressing.

Serves 4 to 8.

5 Simple Money Saving Tips

5 Simple Money Saving Tips

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Hello again! Carly has kindly asked me to use my knowledge from ten years in the Finance industry towards some great, positive posts about Finance (and Heavens above knows we need more positive information about Finance!) In case you didn’t read my earlier post in the travel section, my name is Jade, I’m an Australian born, London resident and blogger over at lalalondon.net.

Today, I want to share some easy and simple money saving tips.  When I first moved out of home and started working full time, I was hopeless at saving money. I was in debt to my eyeballs and couldn’t afford to do much outside of keeping on top of my bills, making sure my car had petrol, getting to work and eating. It didn’t help matters much that I was on a very small salary!

Working in the finance industry, through both retail and investment banking, I’ve managed to pick up a lot of tips along the way to help keep my bank balance out of the red – now it’s my turn to pass them on to you!

1. Segregate your “bill” money from your “everyday” money

It’s easy enough to get paid every week, fortnight or month and accidentally overspend and worry about where the money is going to come from to pay those bills when they are due, so what I like to do is have a second account, called my “Spending” account. Each month when I get paid, I go through my bills and I leave enough money in my bank account to cover those bills and then I transfer the rest of my money into a second account.  I have even, in the past, taken the drastic option of cutting up my ATM card for my bills account so I can only access that money by transferring it through Internet Banking or by physically going into a bank and withdrawing cash over the counter – which I am far too lazy to do!

Note: I include my monthly savings as a “bill” to ensure that I put away money each month.

2. Have a weekly free-spend allowance and feel free to spend it!

When I was contracting, it was very easy to spend the extra money I was earning, simply because it was there in my “Spending” account. I was saving a nominal amount every week but in theory, I should have been using the free money as a top-up for an emergency fund. Needless to say, when I did run into some trouble financially, I didn’t have enough money in my savings to cover it and had to overextend myself with bank credit. Now, as part of my budget, I allow myself $10 per day (weekdays only) to spend as I please. What I usually do is withdraw the $50 on a Monday morning and once I run out, that’s it. Sometimes I might not spend all of my $50, so I can accumulate over a few weeks – at the moment, I am actually in advance of $15, so I know this week, if I feel like treating myself, I can. In fact, this week I am going to have a manicure!

3. If you have Credit Card debt, get rid of it!

With interest rates for saving at such low rates, there is not much point saving large amounts of money if you have debt. Of course, continue to save a small amount each pay cycle, but if you have enough cash in your savings to pay off your credit card or loan, it makes more sense to channel that money into paying off a higher-rate credit card than it is to save it and get a paltry 1% interest. On the other hand, if you don’t have enough cash to pay out your card, ensure you are paying more than your minimum balance – even just $10 or $20 a month makes a huge difference to interest costs over the term of your revolving credit agreement.

P.S. If you’re a card hopper – A lot of card issuers love to issue cards to new customers with 0% balance transfers for 6 months or so. Be careful with these, as sometimes the interest rates shoot up after the 0% honeymoon period ends.

4. Silver (and copper, if you have them) coins go in the coin jar

The easiest and simplest tip of the bunch. Every Friday I clean out my purse and anything under 50c goes in the coin jar. It usually takes me a few months to fill it up but last time I went to the bank with my coin jar, I had the equivalent of around $90 in there. Unbelievable, considering how many one and two pence coins I had in that jar.

5. Treat budgeting like a diet, sometimes it’s OK to break it

I’m not perfect. I overspend on my budget – especially when it comes to clothing and entertainment. I don’t beat myself up about it, because I know that I’m always saving a small bit each month, so it just means it might take me an extra month to reach my savings goal. We all know life isn’t meant to be rushed, don’t we?

Please note, these tips are just that, tips, and if you have any serious money concerns, you should make an appointment to see a financial planner and get qualified advice from them.

Making it hip to clip—coupons

Making it hip to clip—coupons

{John Boal/News & Messenger}

Heather Porter, left, and Brooke Turner have started a blog and a business to teach people how to use coupons to save money.

GAINESVILLE, Va.—They call themselves extreme coupon users.

And they want to help you become one, too.

Heather Porter and Brooke Turner started "Hip to Clip Coupons," a business aimed at helping people learn to use, and to love, coupons.

The women, who live in Haymarket and Gainesville, started clipping coupons to help their families save money. With children ranging in age from toddlers to teens, they started to learn about good deals for all ages.

Soon, people started to notice.

"We'd be saving 60 to 80 percent on our bill every time we went to the grocery store," said Turner. "People kept asking us, 'How do you do that?'&#034

To answer that question, Porter, who works as a piano teacher, and Turner, a former Prince William County teacher, started teaching how-to classes at local community club houses a few years ago.

Last month, they started a blog to offer money-saving tips and to point out good deals.

Their goal is to show people how to save money, and how to have fun doing it, Turner said.

Many people associate clipping coupons with being on a tight budget, Turner said, but that's not always the case.

"You can still enjoy life while saving," Turner said.

"Neither of us keep a budget, because there's really no need," said Porter. "By using coupons and finding good deals, we're saving enough money already.&#034

Porter and Turner are both avid coupon-clippers and deal-hunters and both often save as much as 80 percent on their grocery trips, they said.

Turner said her best shopping trip was the time she went to an area grocery store, bought a shopping cart full of food, and the store actually owed her $14.86.

The key is knowing how to combine coupons with sales and other special discounts to maximize your savings, they said.

"To us it's art form, it really is," Turner said. "It kills me to go somewhere and pay full price for something.&#034

Porter agreed.

"We're just really passionate about it," she said. "We tell our friends you're crazy not to use coupons.&#034

As busy mothers, Porter and Turner said they don't have a lot of spare time. Porter is a mother of five kids ages 14, 12, 10, 7 and 5 and Turner has three young children, ages 11 months, 3 and 4. So they clip coupons whenever they can, sometimes while sitting at the pool or on the sidelines of a sporting event.

At the grocery store, they shop with big binders filled with coupons, sorted by product and category.

"People see [us] in the grocery store and   they want to know how we do it. Husbands will come up to us and say 'My wife needs to do that,'" Porter said.

The women teach two classes, one about how to get started with coupons, and one about how to find good deals in other places. Their next class will be held Aug. 12 at the Piedmont clubhouse in Haymarket. The cost is $25.

Save a buck, buy a bike?

Save a buck, buy a bike?

Are you saving up for a new kayak, pinching pennies for a new pack, or scrimping in the hopes of buying new skis this winter? Don’t overlook the savings you can rack up in the grocery store. Rachel Singer Gordon, the author of Point, Click, and Save: Mashup Mom’s Guide to Saving and Making Money Online, has some ideas on how you can save money grocery shopping for the rest of the summer—heck, for your whole life—so you have a few more dollars to put toward your kit. Can’t wait to splurge on a new bike? Read on for myth-busting and money saving tips:

Myth #1: Buying in bulk, at stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, is better penny-pinching than shopping at the grocery store.

  • Most warehouse stores don’t take coupons.
  • There are no sales at warehouse stores.  Also, good sale prices at grocery stores beat everyday prices at warehouse stores.
  • Grocery stores often offer money-back coupons. On deals like “buy X brand toothpaste for $3.00, get $3.00 off your next shopping trip,” use a $1.00 coupon to make $1.00 by shopping!

So, if you match coupons with sales, and watch for money-back offers you save more than you would with big-box prices.

Myth #2: Buying store brands, instead of national brands, saves money.

  • Use coupons, most coupons are for national brand items.
  • Shop sales you’ll find sale prices on name-brand items generally beat everyday prices of generic items.  Also, match sales with coupons you have to really save.
  • Look for loss leaders or super sale items and match them with your coupons items are practically free.

So, brand-name items are always cheaper on sale, with coupons.

Myth #3: Coupons aren’t for “real food.”

  • Look for organic or natural coupons on company websites like Stonyfield Farm and Earthbound Farms there are printable coupons and opportunities to sign up for mailing lists.
  • Email companies for coupons you will find many companies send coupons to loyal customers, if you provide them with your mailing address.
  • Check major coupon sites and newspaper inserts, you will find coupons for conventional products can work on organic versions.
  • Shop farmer’s markets, because small farms can’t afford the USDA organic process, but they may have acceptable practices.

If you take time to plan you can save so much more!  Rachel saved enough money to buy a playground set for her kids, which is about the same price as that new kayak you’ve had your eyes on.  So start saving!

If you want to hear more of Rachel’s ideas on how to save money, she blogs about money-saving tips at MashupMom.com, or tell us about your tips and tricks to save money on groceries!

In this economic climate what have you found to be your best money saving tips?

Your best tips in saving money on the grocery bill/cooking? monthly expenses/bills-utilities? entertainment? – Ideas on free fun dates or family activities? gas saving tips? etc. What money saving tips have we not thought of? Found any great websites with money saving tips, or freebies? Any & all areas.

Paying bills online and paying just above the minimum if I am not committed to using my charge card and paying x amount a month to not incur finance charges.

buy one of those entertainment passbooks. google it. you buy one for $20 to $30, and it has like 200 pages worth of coupons for restaurants, bowling alleys, amusement parks, movies, grocery stores, etc.

In my opinion, there has never been a better time to search for unclaimed money and property. Sounds too good to be true, but it is VERY true with BILLIONS of dollars waiting to be claimed in all 50 states.

Finding money you didn't know existed (even from deceased relatives) is one of the best feelings ever. It's like winning the lottery, only odds are better.
