Environmentally Friendly & Green Driving – Save Money & Car Fuel Part 2

The latest economic rescue package is not helping much for the general public, at least for a good half a year before we see effects of an slight economic turnaround. Fuel prices are still escalating, food prices has not fallen, you still need to travel to work, to school and earn a living. This is part 2 of that endless car fuel saving tips which I have started to help us tie over the money crunch.

Below is an added list of ways on achieving fuel efficiency, conserving gasoline and attaining cost savings the easy way:

Set Cruise Control at a Fixed Level of Consistent Fuel Usage when driving a stretch of long freeway (or highway). This helps to reduce the intermittent and inconsistent fuel injection by human manual driving which could cause greater wear and tear to your car.

Combine Several Short Trips Helps Save Fuel And Save Money. Once your engine is warmed up they generate less air pollution, so keep it running over a few so combining several short trips into one can make a big difference.

Park it in your Covered garage.Yes, you can save fuel and energy simply by parking your car in a covered garage whenever possible, especially in winter and summer. You would then avoid exposing your car to harsh winter snow and ice as well as the torturing summer sun. This helps you warm up the car faster in winter and cool it better in summer.

Remove Excess Baggage. Get rid of items not required on a daily basis. The most common are golf sets, snow chains, fishing gear etc. Reload on a need to use basis.

Catch that Greyhound Bus. I am not selling for The Greyhound here, but if you have to travel across states or provinces, consider taking the coach. The scenery could do you some good, not to mention the stress of driving across unfamiliar towns and provinces.

Avoid Keeping Your Engine in Idle Mode for long periods. If you are stuck in traffic and you don’t think you are going to go anywhere in the next five minutes, you may want to turn your car off.

New cars do not need to be warmed up for long period of time. So as much as your pocket can help it, change to a new car. And a New Hybrid Car at that too.

Keep good car habits. Before you switch off your car ignition, remember to switch off all electrical units like the car hifi sound system, air conditioning, heating gadgets, compartment lights as well as head lights. This avoids drain on your car battery, reduces maintenance costs.

Communal car pooling is definitely a viable solution to if you could find like minded colleagues who are neighbors living within your vicinity willing to pool resources.

Avoid Rush Hour. And yes, that is the very famous but always ignored suggestion. As much as procrastination gets you, try harder. In countries where they install electronic road pricing measurement ERP gadgets, you could find yourself doubling your fuel consumption, doubling your fuel costs and your travel time. Worst of all, the electronic road pricing slaps an additional toll charge whenever you pass a particular gantry at rush hour!

Eco Friendly & Green Driving – Endless Money & Fuel Saving Car Tips – Part 3

At the time of writing this article, the Dow plunged another 500 points and we are now around 8,500 points. How much have we lost in our stocks, home values and how much disposable income can we squeeze from our existing situation to save and spend less? You exceptionally feel the crunch when you belong to the middle income household, paying a hefty home loan installment, private schools for your children and 2 cars loans.

Today, we continue with part 3 of this series of “Endless Money & Fuel Saving Car Tips” to help you tie over this long recession period.

Check out the following simple yet proven effective ways on achieving fuel efficiency, conserving gasoline and attaining cost savings the easy way:

First, if you Do Not need 2 cars, get rid of 1 of them. If your kids need to get to college daily, get up earlier and send them to school before you make your way to work. That could save you a good few hundred dollars a month.

And have you ever considered car-pooling with neighbors who work around your office? If you have to send your kids to school and your wife needs to get to work at the same time, this would be the perfect arrangement, and could even end up helping you fully pay for your gas consumption too!

Did you know that most cars are made to run on regular unleaded? And I got this right from the guide pack from the petrol company’s website! Check it out with your friendly neighborhood mechanic; most will tell you that getting premium unleaded is merely paying extras for cleaning agents that are probably not required. As long as you do regular maintenance checks and tune ups every season, it should suffice.

Get a car with high MPG, miles per gallon. Or better still, check out the GPM, gallons per mile the lower the better. The lesser the gasoline usage, the more miles you cover and the more goes back into your pocket!

When driving, unless you are in the habit of stress testing your engine and gearbox, do not travel in low gears at high speeds. This wears down your gears very fast and hurts the engine performance as well. And, keep good driving habits. Do not reeve your engine before switching off the vehicle.

Accelerate slowly when picking up at the stop light. Never do a jack rabbit start, as it not only consumes much more fuel, it leads to greater carbon monoxide emission and air pollution. Also, you tend to wear the tires out too.

Do regular tune-ups. Check for worn spark plugs, brake pads, low transmission fluid; re-align your wheels, rotate your tires, replace the air filter whenever required.

Do regular oil checks and replace the oil and filter regularly to ensure fuel economy as well as engine longevity. You can also use recycled oil as replacement but ensure that you get them at specialist workshops that does them.

Be a “greenie” and love your environment and save money. Ride the bicycle for short distance travel and whenever weather permit. Better still, walk, the exercise could do you a whole lot of good! And you get to enjoy the scenery too!

Always keep your car in good tuned up condition. Smooth running cars utilize much less fuel. A good mechanic is worth a million dollars, or the value of your car really.

Top Fuel Injection Engines for the Most Fuel Efficiency (MPG)

Fuel injection engines are great for fuel economy, a topic that is becoming increasingly popular. People are aiming to save money as they drive their vehicles, which is why efficiency is so vital. Listed below are some of the cars with the most efficient EFI engines on the market.

2000 Honda Insight

Featuring a 1 liter, three-cylinder engine, this vehicle manages to make 49 mpg in the city and a whopping 61 mpg on the highway. The fuel injection engine specs for this vehicle beat anything else on the market over the last ten years, but Honda has produced plenty of comparable options for consumers to choose from.

2010 Toyota Prius

This sporty looking vehicle features a 1.8 liter engine with four cylinders. It gets 48 mpg on the highway, and a surprisingly higher 51 mpg in town. This vehicle was built for commuters who must do a lot of in town driving and need to save money on fuel.

2006 Honda Civic Hybrid

This hybrid vehicle fits well in line with Honda’s fuel standards. It has a 1.3 liter engine that puts out 40 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. Filled with the right fuel, this car can truly reduce emissions and help out your wallet at the same time.

2010 Honda Insight

Less fuel economic than its predecessor in 2000, this car still offers 40 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway. The main reason for this may be the addition of a fourth cylinder in the motor, made to increase the power of the car. It is still a wise investment for those wishing to preserve their fuel levels.

10 ways to save money on gasoline

10 ways to save money on gasoline

(Photo: Getty Images)

The United States has a reputation for guzzling gasoline, especially in summer, when increased demand and processing costs drive up the price by an average of 10 to 20 cents per gallon. And while the recession has helped reduce U.S. gas demand in recent years, summer heat — combined with unforeseen variables like hurricanes and oil spills — can still wreak havoc with prices at the pump.

But whether you’re planning a cross-country road trip or just trying to avoid spending your paycheck on commuting, there’s plenty you can do to save money on gasoline. The best strategy is to simply drive less often, maybe carpooling or biking instead, but don’t feel discouraged if that’s not an option.

Check out these 10 ideas for ways to cut back the amount of time and money you spend at gas stations this summer:

       (Chart: fueleconomy.gov)

1) Slow and steady wins the raceGasoline mileage drops off in most cars once you’re going faster than about 60 mph (see chart at left). For every 5 mph you drive over 60 mph, you’re essentially paying an extra 24 cents per gallon of gas.

Try using cruise control on interstates and other highways to maintain a constant speed. It can also help to use your car’s overdrive gears, which save fuel and engine wear by reducing your speed.

2) Be cool in traffic Aggressive driving — speeding, swerving, sudden acceleration and braking — is not only dangerous, it can lower your gas mileage 33 percent on highways and 5 percent on city streets. Revving your engine while stopped is even more wasteful.

3) But not too coolAir conditioning can be a big drain on gasoline, so make sure you don’t just leave it on absentmindedly, and certainly don’t leave it on while windows are open, even if they’re just cracked. You can improve your fuel efficiency in stop-and-go traffic by turning off the A/C and rolling down the windows instead, but that’s not necessarily always the best idea.

When driving above 55 mph, especially for long periods on highways, the opposite is true — open windows make a vehicle less aerodynamic by letting in air, which increases air resistance and decreases fuel efficiency. On long road trips, using air conditioning could actually improve your mileage by up to 20 percent.

4) Don’t just sit thereOn top of pointlessly pumping out greenhouse gases without actually getting you anywhere, idling automobiles also contribute to ground-level ozone, airborne particulate matter, and other near-surface air pollution. These emissions can aggravate asthma and even hinder breathing in otherwise healthy people, especially children and the elderly.

If you’re just idling to warm up your car in winter, it still only needs to run about a minute. Anything beyond that is just wasting gas.

5) Stay in tuneFixing a car that needs a tune-up or has failed an emissions test can improve its fuel efficiency by an average of 4 percent. More serious problems, like a faulty oxygen sensor, can reduce mileage by up to 40 percent.

And don’t forget to get an oil change roughly every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first (or you could look into installing an Electro-Lube Oil Refiner, which reportedly eliminates the need for oil changes while boosting efficiency 3 to 4 percent).

6) Get pumped Keeping a car’s tires properly inflated can improve fuel efficiency by about 3.3 percent. It’s also safer and lengthens the lifespan of your tires, since under-inflated tires lose their tread quickly in addition to wasting fuel. Regular checkups for your tires’ alignment and balance aren’t a bad idea, either.

7) Take a load offWhile it mainly affects smaller cars, carrying extra weight means burning extra gasoline, no matter how big your vehicle is. On average, you may be cutting your fuel efficiency by up to 2 percent for every 100 extra pounds you haul.

8) Develop motor skillsUsing the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil can boost mileage by 1 to 2 percent. Try to also use the lowest grade of gasoline that’s appropriate for your car, since high-octane grades cost several cents more per gallon.

Check your owner’s manual to be sure, but as long as your engine doesn’t start knocking, you’re probably OK. Switching from premium to regular gasoline would save hundreds of dollars every year.

9) There’s a cap for thatGasoline can evaporate from a vehicle’s fuel tank if it’s able to find an opening, which is bad for your wallet and your lungs. Make sure your gas tank’s cap is tightened securely after you fill up, and if the cap’s threading is stripped or it fits too loosely, you might want to buy a new one.

10) Join the massesCarpool or, even better, don’t take a car at all — walk, ride a bike, or take mass transit. It saves you money, improves your personal health, and helps the planet by keeping greenhouse gases out of its atmosphere. See MNN’s guide to greening your commute for more ideas.

ford was not built for fuel efficiency i have had several of them truck and car yu can however use 10mm plug wire set and motorlite plugs change your oil and air breather and no them chips do not work like the magnets they were trying to put out that wrapped around the fuel lines ….not…..they are junk

there are none you might as well spend the money you would waste on the products for gas

Cutting the costs of car repairs, car servicing & maintenance

Your car is unfortunately an almost entirely necessary, very expensive asset. Factoring in petrol, servicing, expenses associated with purchase, repairs and cleaning, your car can be one of the most expensive things you own.

There are a few things you can do to minimise the ongoing costs of your car.

Car pooling is becoming more fashionable and popular as petrol prices remain high and Aussie cities remain choked with rush-hour traffic. Most people car pool with colleagues or friends who work in their vicinity. If you can find someone at your work who lives near you and is willing to car pool you can literally halve the weekly cost of your petrol. Since you’ll be driving your car less you’ll also increase the time between services and reduce general maintained costs.

If you don’t have any acquaintances who are interested in car pooling, try a website like Gum Tree.

A full commercial car wash can set you back about $$$$$, a cost that adds up if you wash your car every fortnight or even every month. Compare that to the cost of a soapy bucket of water, a sponge and a little elbow grease and the maths does itself.

You shouldn’t neglect your car and the better condition you keep it in, the more value will be sustained in the vehicle. Service your vehicle promptly when it’s due and keep the log book in good order. This will also add value to the vehicle if you decide to sell and lessen the risk of serious wear and tear.

Keep your eye on the market and know how much your car would be worth if you elected to sell it. If it looks like the value of your car is going to plummet, try and sell the vehicle and replace it with a model which will hold its value. This way you avoid losing thousands of dollars each time you buy a new car.

As much as possible, pay particular attention to the fuel efficiency of a vehicle and take that into account when deciding what car to buy. You should also consider how a model holds its value.

This is a good example of where it pays in the long term to spend a bit up front. Accidents happen all the time and unless you have money to burn, the last thing you want to worry about after a serious prang is financing a new car. The most important thing is to research different policies and make sure you buy one which suits you and your budget.
